ANIMAL SHELTER TECHNICIAN
SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD
DEPARTMENT: POLICE
JOB CLASSIFICATION: PART TIME
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the direct supervision of the Animal Control Office and/or Chief of Police, performs a variety of professional work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Animal Shelter Technician: Answers public questions and provides animal tracking, disease prevention, and medical treatment for animals at the Animal Shelter. Maintains shelter equipment and repairs minor damage caused by normal use of the facility. Checks animal impound tickets and identification records for accuracy. Examines the health of all animals impounded and notifies supervisor of animals that are sick, injured, require isolation, or need medical attention. Assists with health exams, vaccinations, and medical treatment including administering medication under the direction of the veterinarian or administrator. Receives animals brought into the shelter, assigns holding areas, and maintains accurate records of shelter population. Assists the public in locating lost pets and redeeming animals from the shelter including notifying known owners of their animal's impoundment and providing assistance in filling out forms and applications.
School Crossing Guard: Performs routine unskilled duties as needed to assure safe crossing of school children and the general public at intersections and other road crossings. Observes road traffic to determine best timing for road crossings; admits children and pedestrians into designated crossing locations; escorts children and pedestrians as needed to assure safe crossings. Monitors behavior of children and educates children regarding traffic safety as appropriate. Observes general activity while on duty to detect suspicious behaviors; reports such observations. May prepare various reports related to work time and work activities. Minimum Qualifications may include sufficient education to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above and related duties; and sufficient experience to demonstrate a working knowledge of practices and procedures associated with above duties.
Will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.
Ability to react effectively in emergency and stressful situations; ability to exhibit imagination, initiative and problem solving capability in coping with a variety of situations; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public by being committed to create a positive impact on those they interact with and an eagerness to adjust efforts to ensure the work and attitude helps others.
Performs all other duties as required and assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications may include graduation from high school; AND, sufficient experience and training to demonstrate aptitude or ability to perform above or related duties; OR An equivalent combination education and experience. Must possess a valid drivers license. Must be able to lift 50-75 pounds.
